After our spelling pretest we had a reading lesson on the literary element of theme. Then we began our new reading unit. During the next couple of weeks we’ll be reading and discussing a variety of holiday books. Through these discussions we’ll be comparing and contrasting themes. Monday’s story was Silver Packages by Cynthia Rylant. This story is set in the Appalachian Mountains. Some themes we discovered were repaying kindness by passing it on to others and expressing gratitude for having what you need, even if you don’t get what you want. Students began a prewriting graphic organizer to plan a new writing piece about the best gifts they ever received.
